Imagine that one evening, after returning home, you see through the window a hooded man looking towards your house. You then call the police but the number is constantly out of order. And yes, you are not the only one to have seen this man. So what would you do?
I think in the first place, you would rush on all the openings to close them twice. Maybe even to secure the most "fragile" entrances, you would barricade them by putting furniture in front, or with boards ... I also think that you would not close the eye of the night but you would take care to to spot at any time the attempted intrusion of this thief.
If usually, when you return home, you put yourself at ease (slippers and pajamas), this evening, you would stay shod and dressed to meet all eventualities.
You could also pray, would not you? And if you are "nice", you could even warn your neighbors to barricade their homes or that together you decide to throw yourself on this thief. In short, you would do everything to not be surprised by the latter.
This is what the Lord tells us in His Word:
1 Thessalonians 5.2 - For you yourselves have the knowledge that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Revelation 16:15 - (See, I come as a thief. Happy is he who is watching and keeps his robes, so that he may not go unclothed, and his shame be seen.)
1 Thessalonians 5.4 - But you, my brothers, are not in the dark, for that day to overtake you like a thief:
Revelation 3.3 - Keep in mind, then, the teaching which was given to you, and be ruled by it and have a change of heart. If then you do not keep watch, I will come like a thief, and you will have no knowledge of the hour when I will come on you.
Of course, our Lord Jesus is not a thief, but He gives us this simple image in His Word so that we can have a good understanding of it. He encourages us to watch, not be surprised, to keep our clothes.
Here is the word I have on my heart:
The Lord Jesus is near. Yet, how many of us, like this picture, are in the middle of the night with the doors and windows of our "house" wide open! Wild animals (evil spirits), true thieves, can penetrate through these doors and windows of our hearts that we have not closed.
We must watch in this night ahead of this world. Does this mean that we have to stay up all night praying? Perhaps, but it means especially to watch over our heart at every moment because it is from him that come the bad thoughts, the murders, the adulteries, the impudicities, the flights, the false testimonies, the calumnies.
It is also important to barricade the places of our hearts where we know that we have a weakness that makes us weak. Let us bring this weakness to the light of Christ, repent and let the Holy Spirit invade that dark place of our heart, let the Word of God also do its work in this particular place.
Nor is it time to take off our shoes or take off our clothes. But dressed in His righteousness, it is time to step out of our comfort and be zealous for the Kingdom of God by alerting those who do not yet know that Jesus is at the door.
The Lord is telling us today: I am at the door. Pull yourself together and get ready.
We may say to ourselves like this text from Revelation 3.17: "I am rich, I am rich, and I need nothing". But the Lord says to us, "I advise you to buy fire-gold from me, that you may become rich, and white clothing, that you may be clothed and that the shame of your nakedness may not appear. , and eye drops to anoint your eyes, so that you can see. I rebuke and punish all those I love. Have zeal, and repent.
